Metallic Granite, also known commercially as Metallicus, is a dramatic Brazilian natural stone characterised by sweeping layers of silver, charcoal, black and metallic grey. Its surface contains reflective mineral formations that catch the light, creating a distinctive shimmering effect and a strong sense of movement across the slab.

Despite its commercial classification as granite, its highly varied mineral composition and layered structure give Metallicus a very different appearance and surface behaviour from more uniform granites. Each slab can vary considerably in movement, metallic intensity and contrast.

Design

Metallicus is selected for its strong visual impact. Broad waves of silver and dark grey create an almost liquid-metal appearance, making it particularly effective where the stone is intended to become the focal point of the space.

Its directional movement lends itself particularly well to large statement walls, bookmatched panels, reception counters, bar fronts, kitchen islands and furniture. Dark timber, blackened metal, stainless steel and restrained neutral finishes allow its metallic character to remain prominent.

Surface Finish

A polished finish is commonly used to emphasise the stone’s reflective minerals, depth and metallic appearance. Honed and textured finishes can create a more subdued expression, although the appearance and behaviour of the individual mineral components should be assessed before specifying the finish.

Application

Metallicus is best suited to low-contact vertical and decorative applications, including statement walls, feature panels, wall cladding and selected furniture elements.

Despite being commercially classified as granite, the reflective mineral layers responsible for its distinctive glittering metallic appearance can be relatively delicate. These surface minerals may scratch, flake or peel with repeated contact and abrasion, resulting in visible wear and damage over time.

For this reason, Metallicus is not recommended for dining tables, countertops, kitchen worktops or flooring. These applications are exposed to frequent contact, movement of objects and abrasion, which can prematurely damage the metallic surface and diminish its appearance.

For the best long-term result, Metallicus should be specified where its surface can be appreciated visually without regular physical contact. Fabrication and installation also require careful handling to protect the more delicate mineral formations.
