WHITE CARRARA

Quarried from the Apuan Alps in Tuscany, White Carrara is one of the world’s most historically significant marbles. First quarried during the Roman Empire over two thousand years ago, Carrara marble was used under Emperor Hadrian in the rebuilding of the iconic Pantheon in Rome. Later favoured by Michelangelo during the Renaissance for his sculptures, it remains a defining material in classical architecture, sculpture and contemporary interiors.

White Carrara is recognised for its soft white to light grey background, gently layered with smoky grey veining. Its character is calm, balanced and versatile, offering a refined natural surface that works across both traditional and modern design settings.

Formed from limestone transformed under intense heat and pressure, Carrara is a metamorphic marble composed primarily of calcium carbonate in the form of recrystallised calcite crystals. Its white base comes from the purity of the original limestone, while its grey and bluish veining is created by natural mineral impurities such as mica, quartz and iron oxide.

Design

White Carrara is selected for its quiet architectural presence. Defined by an elegant white tonality that shifts subtly between warmth and coolness, it integrates seamlessly across a wide spectrum of styles, from classical interiors to contemporary architectural spaces.

Within the Carrara family, Bianco Carrara typically presents a softer, smokier white base with less defined grey veining, while Carrara Gioia is often regarded as a finer selection, with a cleaner white background and more delicate, crisp grey movement.

Surface Finish

White Carrara is commonly used in polished and honed finishes. A polished finish enhances its luminosity and veining, while a honed finish gives the stone a softer, more understated surface character suited to contemporary interiors.

Application

Carrara is considered relatively durable within the marble category when properly maintained, with its longevity reflected in centuries-old architecture across Italy where it continues to age elegantly. As a marble, Carrara is softer and more porous than granite or quartzite. Regular cleaning with pH-neutral products is required, and annual sealing is recommended to help preserve the surface over time. With proper care, Carrara can be used for bathroom vanities, wall cladding, interior flooring, furniture, decorative elements, fireplace surrounds, feature panels and selected kitchen applications.
