ITALY

Quarried in the Province of Brescia in northern Italy, near Lake Garda, Breccia Damascata is an expressive Italian stone defined by a warm composition of coral red, dusty pink, soft orange, beige and ivory tones. Its surface is characterised by irregular fragments intersected by pale mineral veining, creating a distinctive mosaic-like appearance.

The name breccia refers to its geological structure, formed when fragments of existing carbonate rock were broken apart and subsequently naturally recemented by mineral material. This process creates the angular fragments, contrasting veins and layered colour that give Breccia Damascata its distinctive character. Unlike marbles defined by continuous flowing veins, its movement is fragmented and irregular, with considerable variation from one slab to another.

Design

Breccia Damascata is selected where stone is intended to introduce warmth, colour and a strong architectural presence. Across larger surfaces, its fragmented formations become a continuous composition, allowing the geological structure of the material to become part of the design.

Its warm palette works particularly well with walnut and other warm timbers, terracotta, bronze and brass. Against crisp white, charcoal or restrained neutral finishes, the stone creates a stronger contrast and becomes a defining element within the interior.

Where consecutive slabs are available, careful vein matching or bookmatching can further emphasise its brecciated structure across feature walls, bathrooms and other large architectural surfaces.

Surface Finish

Breccia Damascata can be used in polished, honed and brushed finishes.

A polished finish intensifies its coral, pink and orange tones while increasing the contrast between the brecciated fragments and lighter mineral veins. Honing creates a softer, more understated appearance, while a brushed finish introduces greater texture and emphasises the natural variation within the stone.

Application

As a carbonate-based stone, Breccia Damascata requires similar care considerations to marble and limestone. It is sensitive to acidic substances and may develop etching, staining and natural patina through use. Its brecciated structure may also contain natural fissures and transitions between fragments, requiring considered fabrication and, depending on the individual slab, resin consolidation or reinforcement.

Breccia Damascata can be used for feature walls, bathroom vanities, wall cladding, interior flooring, staircases, fireplace surrounds, reception and bar counters, furniture, decorative elements and selected kitchen applications.

Cleaning with pH-neutral products is recommended. Sealing may be appropriate depending on the particular slab, finish and application; the required frequency should be determined by the stone and conditions of use rather than treated as a fixed annual interval.
