Calacatta and Statuario are two of the most sought after classic Italian white marbles, prized for their bright white backgrounds and dramatic natural veining.

Calacatta is distinguished by a purer, luminous white base and bold, expressive veins. While its veining can appear in grey, it often carries warmer tones of gold, brown, ochre, or soft rust, created by the presence of iron-rich minerals within the stone. These warmer veins give Calacatta a richer and more dramatic character.

Statuario is recognised for its crisp white background and strong grey veining. Its overall tone is cooler and more monochromatic, with veins that often move diagonally or freely across the slab. Compared with Calacatta, Statuario feels sharper, cleaner, and more sculptural.

Design

Calacatta and Statuario are selected where white marble is intended to become a defining architectural feature. Calacatta offers a warmer, more classic, and traditional aesthetic, with richness and expressive movement that make it well suited to statement islands, feature walls, bookmatched panels, reception counters, and interiors featuring brass, bronze, timber, or soft neutral palettes.

Statuario delivers a cooler, sharper, and more contemporary aesthetic, making it ideal for refined bathrooms, feature walls, vanity areas, interior flooring, furniture, fireplace surrounds, and modern spaces incorporating stainless steel, chrome, black metal, pale timber, or minimal architectural detailing. Its enduring appeal in luxury design is exemplified by its extensive use throughout Saint Laurent boutiques worldwide, where Hedi Slimane selected Statuario marble as a defining element of the brand’s minimalist architectural identity.

Surface Finish

Both marbles are most commonly used in a polished finish, which enhances their white background, natural luminosity, and veining contrast. Honed and matte finishes are also available for projects seeking a softer, less reflective surface character.

As marbles, Calacatta and Statuario are softer and more porous than granite or quartzite. Regular cleaning with pH-neutral products is required, and annual sealing is recommended to help preserve the surface over time. Due to their exceptionally clean and pure white backgrounds, any staining or etching can be more visible, even though Calacatta and Statuario are among the harder marble varieties available.

Application

With proper care, Calacatta and Statuario can be used for bathroom vanities, wall cladding, interior flooring, furniture, decorative elements, fireplace surrounds, feature panels, and selected kitchen applications. For high-use surfaces, staining, etching, sealing, and maintenance requirements should be considered during material selection.
