Quarried exclusively at Crevoladossola in the Ossola Valley, near Domodossola in northern Italy, Palissandro is a distinctive Italian marble recognised for its fine directional banding and broad spectrum of white, beige, bronze and blue-grey tones. The name Palissandro, Italian for rosewood, refers to its characteristic linear structure, reminiscent of natural timber grain.

Geologically, Palissandro is a metamorphic marble composed predominantly of dolomite, with calcite and other minerals contributing to its colour and crystalline movement. Variations in mineral concentration within the same deposit create several visually distinct selections from a single historic quarry.

History

Palissandro has been quarried and used in northern Italian architecture for centuries, with documented use in the Domodossola region dating to the medieval period.

The quarry later supplied stone for significant monuments including the Duomo di Pavia, begun in 1488, becoming historically known as the Cava di Pavia. In Milan, Crevoladossola marble was extensively used for the Arco della Pace, including its monumental monolithic columns and sculptural elements.

Design

Palissandro is characterised by strong linear movement rather than the open, branching veining associated with many classical Italian marbles. This directional structure makes it particularly effective across large surfaces and bookmatched compositions.

In Thailand, Palissandro has become one of the most frequently used natural stones for statement walls and bookmatched feature installations, where its strong directional movement can be composed across multiple slabs to create dramatic architectural surfaces.

Palissandro Classico is the most traditional expression, combining white, cream and pale beige with layered grey, gold and ochre movement.

Palissandro Bronzo has a warmer character, with bronze, beige and brown tones creating greater depth. It pairs particularly well with warm timber, bronze, brass and earthy neutral palettes.

Palissandro Bluette ranges from pale, delicate blue-grey to intense, deep greyish-blue, with layers of silver, white and cool mineral movement. This wide tonal variation allows Bluette to shift from a light, understated expression to a much more dramatic architectural presence.

Surface Finish

Palissandro is commonly used in polished and honed finishes. Polishing emphasises its crystalline luminosity, colour contrast and layered mineral structure, while honing creates a softer, more understated architectural surface. Textured finishes may also be considered depending on the application.

Application

Palissandro can be used for statement walls, bookmatched panels, wall cladding, interior flooring, bathrooms, vanity tops, staircases, fireplace surrounds, reception counters, furniture and decorative architectural elements.

As a natural marble, its mineral structure and directional movement vary between slabs. Acid sensitivity, absorption and surface finish should be considered for high-use surfaces. Cleaning with pH-neutral products is recommended, while sealing requirements should be determined according to the specific material, finish and application.
